National Museum in Belgrade, founded in 1844, is the oldest and central museum in Serbia. It treasures more then 40000 artifacts and artwork connected with the cultural history of Serbia and former Yugoslavia. Due to main building reconstruction, the permanent collection is currently not on view and temporary exhibitions are held in the museum's Atrium. National Museum's collections hosted in other spaces are opened for visits - Gallery of Frescoes and Memorial Museum of Vuk Karadzic and Dositej Obradovic in Belgrade, Archaeological Museum of Iron Gorge in Kladovo and Museum of Lepenski Vir in Boljetin village (latter two are on the bank of the Danube river, near Belgrade).
